Thursday’s show of Pretty & Nice at Kung Fu Necktie didn’t attract waves of woodwork fans, but for those that have been familiar with the group since last summer’s release of Get Young, knew the Boston crew was well worth catching.
Even though the numbers at the Fishtown location weren’t bad, the raucous Philly crowd was most likely watching Rogue Wave at the First Unitarian Church another 10 minutes away, while a more at ease crowd stood by for Pretty & Nice and Title Tracks. Through the combination of a neuro-mashed pop via intermittent synth, stop-and-go electric guitars and a drum that seems more than capable of shaking down a house, leads Jeremy Mendicino and Holden Lewis expelled an hour-long set that turned the dark venue into a kaleidoscopic menagerie of sound.
While “Tora Tora Tora” and “Piranha” led the digital version of the group on Get Young, “Hideaway Tokyo” provided the most frolicking output of the evening complete with robotic ambling around and a truly spastic experience one normally gets from watching an 80s remake video. This act alone morphed a quiet-behind-the-curtains show into a show to look back on repeatedly and hopefully re-enact.
