Hospital Ships part of the Minus Story
Record labels that include Jordan Geiger could be compared with the smiling parents behind scholar students. With Minus Story, Jagjaguwar were those fortunate elders, but now with the newest instantly-likable sound from Geiger, Hospital Ships, Graveface Records can now relish in what should be again considered a first prize effort.
The stimulating candor of Hospital Ships transitions flawlessly from Minus Story’s ‘top-of-the-morning’ optimism like a lullaby into a dream. Although still entwined with the sticky slow roll of Minus Story, the direction of this new project pulls some added flavor from the origin of its name, “The Abandoned Hospital Ship” by the Flaming Lips. The Flaming Lips produce a sound wily in spirit yet traced with very precise chords and electric blips. Hospital Ships does take a page out of their book, but classical influences from ELO, John Lennon and The Zombies push a modern sound a bit closer to a rustic conglomeration.
Hospital Ships are slated to release Oh, Ramona on October 21st. This album was mixed mostly by John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, Modest Mouse) and deals with relationships with friends, lovers and pets (?!?). Tracklistings, album art, a video and a few mp3s are below.
