New law ends music blogging in New Zealand

By on 01/27/2009 – 1:18 PMNo Comment

We received an email from one of our colleagues yesterday notifying us of a law that is scheduled to go into effect in New Zealand on February 28 that will essentially disconnect people who are ‘suspected’ of downloading illegal material. This, of course, includes blogs.

This new section to the Copyright Amendment Act 2008 aims to prevent repeat offenders of illegal sharing/downloading of “music, videos and other intellectual knowledge on the internet.” More importantly, proper and well defined statutes haven’t been labeled, rather someone suspected of promoting illegally downloadable items can have their ISP ripped from them based solely on suspicion.

Since this is a matter of infringing upon creative outlets, we would like to show our readers and artists how they can help. Head to http://creativefreedom.org.nz/petition.html if you find this irritating. For the full breakdown of the law, head to http://www.stuff.co.nz/4813173a28.html .

Please post a comment if you have a unique take on the matter.
