Athlete’s New Album ‘Black Swan’ Details

Athlete

Has it been two years already? It seems like it was just yesterday Beyond The Neighbourhood overtook our iPods in 2007. Well its true, Athlete’s fourth studio album titled Black Swan is prepped and ready for release in the UK on August 24th (a US release date is still unknown).  The album has been mastered earlier this month.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Interview, Athlete’s lead singer Joel Potts says this album is their best yet:

Singer Joel Pott has already declared the 10-song set “the best thing we’ve ever done” – and Roberts agrees. “I think so. It’s always hard to compare albums, all of them have been done at a particular time and mean something at that point. Where we are at the moment, this is the best we’ve reached.

“I think it’s the most cohesive album we’ve done. We were quite clear about what we wanted it to be at the beginning. We wanted to keep it a simple album, based on getting the songs across as much as we could. It’s what we set out to do and we kept to that as much as possible.”

Now fimly afoot under their new label, Fiction Records, Athlete couldn’t be more happy with where they’ve landed.  The band is currently performing all ten of their new songs on their UK tour.  You can check those dates out on their MySpace page

There are also quite a few YouTube clips of their newest songs too.  If you can’t wait to hear the new album, you can check out one of their songs, “The Getaway” and a few others by viewing this clip.  Although the video quality isn’t great, you still get the idea of what they’ve accomplished here.

Here’s their official announce ment from their official website:

As you may be aware the band parted company with Parlophone (EMI) Records a few months ago. We are delighted to announce that they have now been signed to Fiction Records, home of Snow Patrol, Elbow, Kate Nash, Ian Brown, White Liesm, The Maccabees and many other great artists. The new album, ‘Black Swan’, will be released in the UK on 10th August.

Beyond the Neighbourhood is definitely in my top 5 albums of all time, people who criticise it I would say have probably only listened to it once. And Black Swan is also very good, interesting lyrics, lots of melody. I think it is actually extremely beautiful, a rollercoaster of an album taking the listener through a string of emotions.

But then again I love Athlete so I am very open to the things they deliver. Have a few listens and it will grow on you!

Beautiful, pretty songs that make me happy, Athlete for the win!

I really enjoyed Beyond the Neighbourhood as well. It was their first album I feel they really stepped outside of the box. Lots of critics always compare their newest albums to Vehicles & Animals or Tourist, which is unfair since bands like Athlete always strive to change and develop into something else.

Black Swan is an album full of songs about life and love, which took a bit of adjusting for me at first, but have really grown on me. Their deluxe CD has about 6-7 acoustic songs, but I prefer to just listen to the 10 on the album. I also think their B-side “Summer Sun” is one of their best, and really should have been a part of this album.
