Show Review: Paper Route
Fishtown’s music scene is continuing to grow in Philadelphia. Within a four block radius, Johnny Brenda’s, The Barbarry, The M Room and now Kung Fu Necktie all cater to affordable shows with artists from around the country.
Friday night featured Nashville’s Paper Route and their tour co-headliners Audrye Sessions at Kung Fu Necktie for what turned out to be what we said was “a really good show” at a venue we hope to attend more often.
Paper Route

The setup for Paper Route on the tunnel-shaped stage lasted several minutes longer than it takes a typical indie band to organize. With ear pieces on many of the members, multiple loop pedals, a laptop, a keyboard and a synthesizer, the five-man band needed plenty of wires and even more skill to organize and pull off every sound.
Playing to their recently released album Absence, the members bounced around stage, constantly dabbling in more than one instrument. Whether a bassist turned to an accordion player or the keyboard player began working on a drum machine, the group artfully jigged around the stage and performed an impressive set in front of head-bobbing onlookers.
Outside of the instrumental output, vocals from JT Daly and Chad Howat constantly emitted from the mic although heavy drum bass and electronic add-ons somewhat took away from their overall pitch. “Gutter” represented the heaviest of the group’s volume as it resembles a Linkin Park-type energy while while “Be Healed” showed a pop side.
Paper Route and Audrye Sessions are touring until July 27. For more on Paper Route, head to their web site, MySpace for tour dates or check out Absence on iTunes.
