The States Have A Touch of Genious

Submitted by Justin on September 2, 2009 – 5:48 pm3 Comments

thestatesThe States, one of two groups on Genious Collective Records, has a bright future.  Claiming Brooklyn as home, The States’ innovative attitude doesn’t stay at home, rather it does just what a group with a name such as theirs does – it expands from concert hall rock to East Coast punk venue to Chico-esque simplicity at the beach.

thestates_largeChris Snyder (vocals, guitar), Joe Stroll (drums) and Pete Connors (bass) form the trio of musicians who will be touring the United States this Fall to deliver the word about their upcoming EP, We Are The Erasers, which releases on September 22.  Behind the Harvard-educated Snyder, the lyrics pace the patient indie rockers, and while still verging on the edge of punk with Stroll’s drums and psychedelia with Connors’ bass, The States emit an almost singer/songwriter aura when the electric fades away.

This s/s feel only lasts for a short period with the group though, as they obvoiously make every lyric count, but they also explore influence with the strings and percussion they have at hand.  Off of the new EP, “Bodies” hints at a Muse influence, cleanly conveyed around calmly spoken words that soon explode into a hair-whipping frenzy.  “Brightstar” could be a lost track from Faith No More, minus Mike Morris’ wily vocals and the organic keyboards, as the bass flies and each word presses for sympathy.  The EP is more than the five tracks on it, and that speaks volumes for where the New Yorkers could be heading.

The States’ Fall tour runs from September 7 to November 5.  They previously released The Path of Least Resistance and Multiply Not Divide.  For more on the group head to their website or check out their MySpace.

    Something new and dare i say fresh? {hate that word}
    Are the days of the teaser EP coming back?

    This one caught my interest……

    thanks Jus.

    Although mainstream pop tends to overuse/kill the word fresh, guys like The States let you know music is still progressing and I couldn’t be happier to promote a group like them. The label, which is a self-run one, also has Snyder’s other work,The Light Brigade, on it.

    I do believe the teaser EP is in full effect right now. Fleet Foxes’ Sun Giant EP and The Little Ones’ Terry Tales & Fallen Gates EP are just a few examples of EPs from last year that did a good job of ‘teasing’ the album.

    Thanks for the kind words on the EP. Great band, amazing progression since meeting them. A full length is in the can, and I think will show people (hopefully soon) that great long plays are still being made. Hopefully everyone shares our sentiment that these guys deserve to fall on more ears…
