Music Under Fire: Top 30 Albums For 2009

Submitted by Brendan on January 19, 2010 – 10:36 pm4 Comments

Top Albums of 2009

With many head-turners throughout 2009, we found much more strength in our singles list than in albums this past year. However, our top 30 albums are nothing to sneeze at. Several albums this past year held strong to the winds of past years and we’re quite sure 2009 will be revisited many times for years to come.

Among this year’s greats were lots of female vocalists including Great Northern and Metric. in our top 10 albums. It goes without saying Phoenix made a huge impact this year. Not only was Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix our number one album, but we had practically declared on first listen. As premature as that may seem, some of our favorite albums this year hit us hard on our first listen such as Hurricane Bells’ Tonight Is The Ghost and Vib Gyor’s We Are Not An Island.

Just as we did last year, we chisseled this list down to only 30 albums so we could cut out any extensive list so you can see what we truly enjoyed in 2009. We hope you enjoy what we continue to listen to from the past year!

MP3:Phoenix – Girlfriend (buy)
MP3:The Rifles – Winter Calls (buy)

Refreshing to see a list without most of the usual suspects. A lot of stuff in this list that I’ve never heard. There are 5 or so records that I checked out and really like. Thanks for the heads up.

  • admin says:

Much appreciated… this list was quite tough for us to put together. Its tough to not put a few of the ones that made it more popular since they are great albums. When we were making this list, we didn’t look to see what other sites put up, we really enjoyed these albums! Glad you found a few you liked!!

We will have our top 100 songs out in the next week. Stay tuned…

  • Brain says:

I like the list. Mute Math is my fav album this year. I can’t get enough of this album. I liked the Rifles album, a little too high for me. White Lies, Say Hi, Paper Route, Phoenix…all good. I am excited to check out some of the other ones you have listed that I don’t know about. You guys always put out good reviews and have musical tastes similar to mine so I love to check the site out. I think you forgot some great albums, but we can’t all agree on everything.

Hayden – The Place Where We Lived
As Tall As Lions – You Can’t Take It With You
Hezekiah Jones – Bread of Teeth – Local Philly Band
Canadian Invasion – Three Cheers for the Invisible Hand
    Pilot Speed – Wooden Bones
    The Rocketboys – 20,000 Ghosts
    Fruit Bats – Ruminant Band
Throw Me the Statue – Creaturesque
We Were Promised Jetpacks – These Four Walls
Foreign Born – Person To Person
    Ramona Falls – Intuit
    Brazos – Phosphorescent Blues
    Pet Lions – Soft Right

Ok…maybe not all of these are two 30 material…but I think the top 6 in my list should be, at least in my top 30.

    Cheers!
