SXSW Artist Showcase And Playlist
In anticipation of South By Southwest’s (SXSW) launch in Austin today, we’re pleased to present a bunch of quality artists/groups we hope our readers and those visiting this event can get into. Also, if you plan on attending and don’t see your group below, give them a shout by leaving a comment.
First off, I’m a huge fan of solo Irish artists who are more than just one person. In particular, Rams’ Pocket Radio and Peter McCauley oozes with talent as he plays drums, piano and everything in between. The other artist we never forget is Darragh Nolan and Sacred Animals. Nolan is no stranger to Austin as he has played there with Angel Pier and covered bands there as part of Ireland’s indie promotion. Sacred Animals released the Welcome Home EP in October.
From California, The Happy Hollows spring to life on the heels of Sarah Negahdari as a clamor surrounds her no-more BS singing. The group released the album Spells last January and a B-Sides EP last month. Hailing from the same state, Light FM‘s take on new wave seems like soundtrack music mixed with emo – yes, that’s why you should check them out.
The groups from New York are also aplently as High Highs, Violens and Miracles of Modern Science should be looked up. High Highs add an ambient pop delivered through earnest vocals and hardly plucked guitars. Violens press an uptempo ballad rock that hums through the speakers and as a group we’ve followed for years, it’s great to hear they’ll be in the mix. Lastly from Cali, Miracles of Modern Science‘s features a fully group-centered effort as the strings (violen, guitar) synchronize as dual vocals roll on top of the ever-pacing drums.
With their album Reptilians out this week, Starfucker needs no introduction, but perhaps The Tender Box‘s EP2 missed your radar as they released their EP on March 8. While the track below is indecipherable by us, the Hispanic and Brit-pop combo has created a bouncy, bar jam sure to lighten your day.
