Review: Under Electric Lights – Waiting For The Rain To Fall
Rating: 8.4/10
Danny Provencher is a ‘bright’ lad (pun intended) to say the least, or at least we can surmise that from his first album under the moniker Under Electric Light. Provencher did something we have not seen (or heard) in quite some time, in fact, we’re so tuned-in to his first album Waiting For The Rain To Fall, that we’re already anticipating his next album.
Provencher seemingly and quite effortlessly lulls us into this album immediately with “Take Me Away”, perhaps his most attractive and accessible track here. The brazing underbrush of raw guitar provides the perfect backdrop for the sweet melodies found throughout the album. This single notion provides the overall strength of this album. Not only does the contrast of two guitar layers provide enough to mediate the album into a solid product, but we also hear layered harmonies from Provencher himself. Indeed, we’ve got the full package here for a glorious debut.
Connecting two genres of shoe-gaze and rock propelled this album into the stratosphere for me. Being a fan of Hammock, but really digging the guitar melodies of Longwave (see Hurricane Bells), Under Electric Light is that niche band that will either hit you hard or leave you curious for more. “Someone Somewhere” adds yet another stunning track to Provencher’s work here as this memorable song fuzzes you into a dreamlike state as the album progresses.
But Waiting For The Rain To Fall won’t lull you to sleep. Tracks such as “This Moment” kick off nicely with some persistent drums in the background. In fact the song’s vocals almost move into lo-fi territory like that of The Radio Dept. Although this album features some low-key songs as opposed to the niche songs I just immediately fell in love with, the album flows nicely. A full listen is quite worthy here.
Waiting For The Rain To Fall is now out! You can purchase it on iTunes or go to Under Electric Light’s official site for more information and options to listen to the album in full.
