Haydn Hoffman Exclusive Interview & Downloads!

By on 08/11/2011 – 11:05 AMNo Comment

Haydn Hoffman has been making waves in the electro scene of late; with his big synths, heavy drums and his penchant for churning out tracks that not only pack some serious punch, but also are appealing to people of varied musical preference. An interesting character, a med school student and passionate musician, which path will he venture down? Read on to find out…

How did you get into producing?

I’ve been making music since I was 11.  I started out with guitar and was in a pretty serious post-hardcore band, but after we broke up I started getting into electronic music via Daft Punk and Justice.  I started experimenting with Ableton Live and fell in love with producing.

What software and synths do you use?

I use Ableton Live 8 for everything.  All of my basses are made in Massive and I use Pro-53 a little bit too.

Give us your top 3 studio tips?

1.  Master one synth before you go out and buy a bunch!  It’s a lot better to be proficient with one than decent at a lot.

2.  One thing I like to do with “complextro” tracks is to sidechain all the basses/oneshots to the kick individually, then group them together and put a sidechain compression on the group as well.  It gives the track an added bounce.

3.  To fatten up my kicks and snares I layer them with 2-3 different samples, then displace them from each other by 1-5 milliseconds.

What’s your favourite song of all time?

Hmm, this is a tough one.  I’m going to say: Example – Watch the Sun Come Up (Devil’s Gun Zeitgeist Remix).  I’ve been playing that track for over a year and it never gets old.  It goes in every one of my sets.

Who would you most like to DJ with?

Dirtyloud.  He’s probably my biggest musical influence at the moment.

Which DJs/Producers influence your music?

Porter Robinson, Zed’s Dead, Zedd, Dirtyloud, Felguk, Lazy Rich.

What gigs have you got lined up at present?

Nothing in the near future.  I am playing a cruise in January which I’ll have more info about soon (it’s not Holy Ship).

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In school still!.  I’m pursuing a career as a doctor so I don’t know what’s going to happen to my music… right now I’m just trying to put out as many tracks as I can and get as many people to hear them as possible!

Word Association Game:

Money – Power
Women – Love
Computer – Ableton
America – Democracy
Music – Expression
Skrillex – Cinema
England – Royalty

So in summation, if you are ever recovering from surgery and hear a ball busting powerful electro banger of a track; then no you aren’t in heaven, you have just been operated on by Dr. Hoffman. Couldn’t think of a better way to wake up in all honesty! See below for some choice tracks from the Hoff, and follow links to his Facebook and Soundcloud.

Avicii – Le7els (Haydn Hoffman Bootleg Remix)

This track is just fantastic, hard hitting synths and the perfect nod to the original still there; with some great sampling and overall brilliant concept.

Crissy Criss – Kick Snare (Haydn Hoffman Dubstep Remix)

Heavy and filthy, the vocals are used wisely and the drops are monstrous. Well produced, clinically grimy bass and some great synths.
