Song of the Week: Dan Mangan – We Want To Be Pleasantly Surprised, Not Expectedly Let Down

Song of the Week: Dan Mangan – We Want To Be Pleasantly Surprised, Not Expectedly Let Down

The Song of the Week on a Friday, why not.  Combine a Vancouver folk singer into a clamor of rapping drums and an electric guitar bent on distortion and you’ve got Dan Mangan’s latest track, which arrives on October 16 as a 7″ titled Radicals off of Arts & Crafts Records.

A rock ruckus surrounds the drawn-out vocals of leadman and namesake Dan Mangan throughout “We Want To Be Pleasantly Surprised, Not Expectedly Let Down”.  This track reminisces of the Mumford & Sons folk/rock style in terms of instruments, yet Mangan whispers a fair amount of the lyrics as the uproar around him subsides.  It’s unfair to call this just Dan Mangan alone though, as Gord Grdina, Kenton Loewen and John Walsh provide a stellar (radical) accompaniment.

Dan Mangan’s success began well before this track above as him and his group have toured with The Walkmen and The Decemberists, most recently won three West Coast Music Awards.  The group is currently touring through Canada and will eventually reach the European section leg in late November.  For more on Dan Mangan, check out the website, Facebook and Twitter pages.

There are more people than those three on this track. Hannah Georgas for one, who is stellar artist. Her song "Enemies," is great! Give her a go if you haven't before. :)

There is absolutely nothing about this track that sounds like Mumford... Didn't you use your ears? Good tune though..
